Bullies and Beasties – By Nitya GollapudiIn On The Page
One lunchtime, two young girls, Cyd and Shelby, were being bullied – again!
“You’re just tiny pipsqueaks who don’t know anything!” teased a particularly nasty girl.
“No we aren’t!” retorted Cyd.
Shelby cowered behind her. “Can we please just go now?” she whispered.
“Ok,” Cyd agreed. “Perhaps it’s time for us to go to our special land, where we can be safe.”
They had previously discovered an amazing, adventure-filled land, where they privately went – this was the girls’ secret.
Shelby took out her pink phone, tapped on an icon and a glimmering portal appeared in a flash. Shelby stepped through and Cyd followed.
Unusually, they found their land to be murky and dreary. A strong gust of icy wind whistled from the east. A rabble of blobby monsters were creating a sleet-storm. The star-flowers wilted rather than twinkled and the trees drooped wearily under the weight of the heavy pelting of slushy grey snow. One thing was for sure, these monsters needed to be stopped. But how…?
“Wait!” exclaimed Shelby, “Remember that book I got out of the library?”
“You want to read at a time like this?” asked Cyd.
“No, I remember it telling me about Meek Squeaks – monsters like them,” Shelby announced. “Come on, we need to make a potion and I know just the person to help us.”
“Florence the Fairy – of course!” cried Cyd.
They dashed to a quaint cottage in the heart of the woods where Florence already had a cauldron bubbling over the fire. Even though the fire blazed, she still shivered with cold.
“Hello, you two,” she greeted them, her teeth all a chatter. “Ever since those Meek Squeaks started their sleet storm, I just can’t seem to get warm.”
“Don’t worry, I think we’ve found a way to stop them, but we need your help,” explained Shelby, hurriedly pressing the recipe book into Florence’s hands.
Florence quickly set about tossing various weird and wonderful ingredients into her cauldron, which bubbled and flashed fantastically. She bottled the potion up in a tiny little purple glass jar and stopped it with a cork.
“There, that should do the trick,” she said, proudly presenting Shelby with the jar.
With no time to lose, Cyd and Shelby bolted out into the snowstorm where those wretched Meek Squeaks were still causing mayhem.
Shelby released the cork from the jar; the potion shot out into the sky and rained down on those beastly monsters. They instantly stood still, dead in their tracks and scratched their heads. They stopped wanting to be mean. In fact they couldn’t remember why they had been so cruel in the first place.
Cyd and Shelby cheered triumphantly.
“Is there any of that potion left in the jar?” asked Cyd mischievously.
Shelby knew exactly what Cyd was thinking. “There most certainly is,” she smiled waving the jar in the air.
And with that, she tapped the pink phone once more and soon they were back at school on the playground.
That nasty girl was approaching Cyd and Shelby again, preparing to hurl her next storm of insults at them. But Cyd and Shelby knew what to do.
“Now!” signalled Cyd.
Shelby released the cork from the jar and the last drops of the potion shot up in the air like a firework and sprinkled down all over the nasty girl’s head.
The nasty girl frowned and stared at Cyd and Shelby in confusion. “I… er… what was it I wanted to say again…?” she stammered.
“How should we know,” replied the girls.
“Oh… er… never mind then…”
And the girl walked off sheepishly.
“I don’t think we’ll be troubled by any more beasts or bullies from now on,” chuckled Shelby.
“You can say that again,” laughed Cyd.
